CAPN was founded in November of 1998 by the professional staff of
the Georgia Nurses Foundation Women and Childrens Clinic, which closed its doors
October 30, 1998 after a redirection of its mission. With the closing of the on-site
shelter clinic there was a major concern that access to care for this very needy
population would be severely impaired, resulting in no access for many.
The professional staff of the clinic, having developed the expertise and community resources necessary to provide comprehensive health care to this population, kept clinic services uninterrupted until our own non-profit status could be realized. The Atlanta Womens Foundation (AWF) in its commitment to women and children provided fiscal responsibility for CAPN until we were granted a separate 501(c)(3) in March of 1999. The clinic operated for more than twelve years in its former on-site location in the Moreland Avenue Women and Childrens Emergency Shelter. The Women and Childrens Emergency Shelter now owned and operated by the Atlanta City Mission and the CAPN Clinic have relocated to a new site in the Milton Avenue Emergency Shelter in Southeast Atlanta. More than 150 homeless women and children are housed nightly within this structure. |
